The house and gardens have a number of follies, not overly practical but lots of fun and suitable conversation pieces. The Chinese reading room is a suitable case in point; the room was added to the house in the mid to late 1800s following a visit of the Atkinson family to Hong Kong. We are in the process of furnishing the room with chinese antiquities, many brought back from our own time in Hong Kong!
The octagonal room, reflecting the shape of the hallway and the major ends of the building, provides a tranquil spot for quiet contemplation on a summer's day. The room gets its fait share of sunshine and opens out onto the verandah and allows access to the front garden.
